Meet the Camp Staff
Chris Cameron, "Pop Nature"
Chris is the Executive Director at Camp Ocean Pines. He loves to watch birds, catch snakes, and look at all the cool things you find under a rock, and has explored nature on four continents. He has been a naturalist for years and an environmental education consultant for the California Department of Education. He ran a really fun summer adventure program for kids called Explorers' Club. A naturalist at heart, Chris hiked the John Muir trail when he was 17, leads workshops for the Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (AEOE), and trains teachers. Chris helped establish the CREEC.org network to provide teachers with resources to increase the environmental literacy of California students. Chris can drive a bus and perform CPR! Along with that, he has many certificates in environmental education curriculum subjects. Chris holds a Master's degree in organizational leadership graduating with highest honors from BIOLA University. His favorite restaurant is Taco Bell.
Rosemay Cameron, Director of Operations
Rosemay, a mother of three sons, offers her organizational skills to the administrative offices of Camp Ocean Pines. A graduate of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, she seeks to establish this facility as a highly desirable camp for those who need to come to rest and learn away from the harried pace of everyday life.
Martha Barbee, Program Director
Martha is our new Program Director at Camp Ocean Pines as of September 2007. She graduated from Warren Wilson College in North Carolina with a Bachelors degree in Environmental Education and Outdoor Leadership. Having directed marine science programs in the Florida Keys for the past few years, she is excited to bring her passion for teaching and learning to the California coast. A few of the certifications she holds include Wilderness First Responder, Open Water Diver, Skin Diving Instructor, and Waterfront Lifeguard. In her free time you are most likely to find Martha hiking, fishing, diving or rock climbing, anything in the great outdoors. Her infectious enthusiasm for exploring nature makes her a great addition to Camp Ocean Pines.
Gene Freed, Facility Manager
Gene is in charge of keeping our campus operational. His smile and willing spirit have facilitated many challenging projects at Camp Ocean Pines.
Naturalists, 805-927-0254
naturalists@campoceanpines.org
Each year, some of the brighest young minds join the naturalist staff at Camp Ocean Pines. They are graduates in biology, geology, education, and recreation, and receive further training in environmental education methods and California State ED Standards from the camp directors. Through active involvement with the environment, these naturalists share their enthusiasm, knowledge and love for nature with hundreds of students from diverse backgrounds. As examples of what is totally "cool", these naturalists become the role models of environmental awareness for the kids who hang on their every word.
Joe Dabill, Instructor in Primitive Technologies

Joe is a leader in primitive skills. Using natural materials, he creates bows, arrows, drills, and many other Native American tools. His instruction is a high point at Camp Ocean Pines and his artifact reproductions are available for sale. Please call 805-927-0254 if interested in his handcrafted items.
