candyce.jpgAbstract Stone Carving with Candyce Garrett

Let's get after it and carve some granite! Whether it be monumental sculptures or small sculptures we will cut, grind, drill, break, polish and burn granite, and the results will be your own work of art. Candyce will demonstrate all of the steps and help you apply them to your individual pieces. Candyce has been carving since 1980, and served a year of apprenticeship with Jesus Moroles in 2001. She has public installations in Taos, New Mexico, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Dublin, Ohio, and San Antonio, Texas. Private collectors include the San Antonio Spurs and many individuals throughout the country. After developing the technique of granite piercing granite 3 years ago, which gives the look of granite passing through granite, it has quickly become my signature style, and I would like to share with you how it is done. Also, I would like to show how to inlay granite, another technique I started doing 6 years ago, which adds color and design to a sculpture.  Although granite has the reputation of being limiting and difficult to work with, through my experience I have learned quite the opposite. I am looking forward to sharing my techniques with you and expanding your knowledge of granite.

Stone & Figure Drawing with John Fisherpublicity photo.jpg

John will present and discuss the creative process for the sculpture he will have in progress during the symposium.

"I plan on carving a demonstration piece over the course of the week. From an abstract beginning I will develop a figurative sculpture using a technique called Profile Carving, based on the knowledge acquired through life drawing. Because of this, I am also offering two evening classes of drawing from the model."

Burnishing and Smoke Firing Clay with Francine Kirsch

IMG_0644.jpgSituated in the cosy nature room, far from the dust and noise, this workshop is going to be a nice way to end the day. We will explore the ancestral method of making pinch pots, animals or small sculptures and burnishing them with a polishing stone. We will also enjoy the exciting experience of firingthem in organic material to create a black patina.

Francine Kirsch was born in France and came to Santa Barbara, CA in 1974 where she started to work with clay. As she moved to the country in Northern California with her family, she specialized in burnishing and smoke firing her sculptures. She also lived and continued her artistic endeavors in Japan for 5 years and had many exhibitions there. Her work is in private collections all over the world. The recurrent themes in her sculptures are inspired by the natural curves in nature and the human figure. She also still works in clay and has been carving stone since the 1st Sculptors Symposium in Cambria.   She now lives and has her studio in Goleta, CA.

dave turner.jpgWood and Ferro-cement with David Turner

In this workshop, we will explore various means of building form with wood and ferro-cement. Laminating, carving and grinding wood as well as trowelling and burnishing ferro-cement are some of the modes we'll work in, culminating with a group project inspired by Brancusi's "Endless Column."

David Turner has been making sculpture for the past 25 years, combining scavenged wood with many other materials, including ferro-cement, stone and found objects.

Clay Modeling with Nevin Littlehale and Evany Zirul

Nevin and Evany will team up to teach methods of observation and the form of three major masses to sculpt the human figure. Using calipers, proportion, fixed points and a plumb bob, we will quickly line up our three major masses thus defining our gesture and break it down and do it again. After it is clear on how to prepare a figure for observation in a reclining, evany.JPGseated and standing pose, we will choose a stance and begin a longer pose where we address issues of anatomy.
