Camp Ocean Pines

Camp Ocean Pines in CAMBRIA, CALIFORNIA was established in 1946 to serve the community as a non-profit camp and a conference center. Located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the Central Coast, our closest airport is San Luis Obispo (SBP). Camp Ocean Pines sits on thirteen acres of Monterey Pine forest that overlooks the ocean shore.

Learn more about Camp Ocean Pines in our About Us page. Parents, check out our summer camp page to see what is available for your kids. Marine Science Weekend w/ Pieter Folkens - $225/person

February 19 - 21, 2010

Pieter Folkens Marine Science SeminarAs a researcher, conservationist and artist Pieter's work has literally changed the way we look at whales. For decades Pieter's beautiful and accurate renderings of marine mammals has opened the door for students, educators, biologists and the public to gain a greater understanding of the diversity and ecology of these amazing mammals. His remarkable illustrations are seen daily on the posters we hang in classrooms and in the field guides we have on our bookshelves. The accuracy and detail found in all his work comes from 35 years of field experience with animals throughout the Pacific. As co-founder of the Alaska Whale Foundation , this native Californian continues to help us better understand our ocean world by spending most of his summers observing humpbacks and orcas in their northern feeding grounds. From his early work at UC Santa Cruz teaching students field sketching techniques to creating life size marine mammal sculptures for hollywood hits, Free Willy and Star Trek IV, all of Pieter's work has helped to create a greater appreciation and understanding of marine mammals. Camp Ocean Pines is honored to have Pieter come visit and tell us the story he has seen through observing these animals year after year. For a schedule of the weekend, please go to our workshops page.
